Sharpen your pencils and grab your jumbo pink eraser because it's Scorecard Week at The Rally Towel!
I was trying to think of a themed week for the newsletter that would act as a ramp up to the new season. While teams are getting back into shape at their Spring Training facilities, I was wondering what us fans can do to prepare for the season? Watching baseball, truly watching baseball, is an act of participation. There’s the conversations between spectators, the engagement with broadcasters, the beer swilling and peanut cracking, and, of course, the scorekeeping.
I don’t recall the exact moment I learned to keep a scorecard, but I definitely have flashing moments in my memory. My dad played a huge role in this. We bought a scorecard and game program every time we hit Shea Stadium for a game. When I was a kid, Little league coaches encouraged players to take a turn keeping the book on the bench as a way to stay in the game while out of the game. In the current era of youth baseball, GameChanger has replaced the traditional scorebook for many teams. If it’s the team I’m coaching, I still insist someone1 keeps the book the old fashioned way.
The line-up card for this week is stacked. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a rookie when it comes to keeping score, I hope you’ll find something nostalgic, insightful, or just plain fun in this series of newsletters.
